WhatsApp in their latest update today rolled out Video Call option for its over 1 billion users worldwide on iOS, Android and Windows Phone. Previously it was enabled only in the Beta version, for which Two Decimal had reviewed here. Once the Video calling in beta version is out, users knew that the feature is round the corner and will be rolled out at any time.
Please update the WhatsApp from Play Store or App store and to do a video call, Open a contact and hit the call button which will give the option of Video Call or Voice call. To kick off the video call, you simply select the “video call” option from this screen. A few screenshots are given below.
During the call itself, you can switch between the forward-facing and rear camera, mute the call or press the red button to hang up, which are exactly similar to Skype. It seems the user interface varies slightly on Android and iPhone in terms of where the picture-in-picture video feed is displayed, as well as the buttons’ size, lineup and placement.
With video calling, WhatsApp will catch up with a number of rivals, including Facebook’s own Messenger app, as well as Skype, Apple’s FaceTime, Viber, LINE and Google’s recently launched Duo, to name a few.
Even though its late, due to WhatsApp massive user base, introducting this feature will help them to retain its users without fleeing to other apps.
“…we want to make these features available to everyone, not just those who can afford the most expensive new phones or live in countries with the best cellular networks,” the company said in its announcement, published today.
