Consolidated steps to install CyanogenMod on any Android device

Phone

What is CyanogenMod?

CyanogenMod is an Android OS version usually abbreviated to CM, is an open-source operating system for smartphones and tablet computers, based on the Android platform. CyanogenMod is an aftermarket firmware for a number of cell phones based on the open-source Android operating system. It offers features not found in the official Android based firmwares of vendors. Below we are explaining the steps to install it in your phone. We have tried on an 2013 model Samsung Galaxy Note 2, but the steps are similar for most of the Android phones.

Preparations before installation
  • Full charge the phone.
  • Take a copy of all the files in Phone and Card into a PC.
  • Take backup of Messages, Call logs and Contacts separately using any app of your choice, we recommend Easy Backup and Sync to Google as well.
  • WhatsApp backup needs to be taken separately from the App itself.

Please note that we will not be responsible for any damage happened to your phone due to this installation.

Installation
Rooting the device
  1. Install Towel root apk. (https://towelroot.com/tr.apk)
Rooting is a straight forward process just click on the button. done. After which it may give a message that Knox needs to be disabled, Yes or No. Click Yes. In case if it stays in the same screen for 2 -3 minutes, reboot. And do the same, it will get rooted this time. If you are familiar with other methods of rooting, you can proceed with that.
  2. Once rooted, Install Super SU from Playstore, just to confirm its rooted. Its basically a gate keeper to control which all apps should be authorized for the Super User permission to access the Root. If Super SU works fine, it means your device is rooted. Congratulations.
    Install Custom Recovery & Drivers
  3. Next step is to install the Recovery. Recovery is basically a boot screen to select which OS to be installed, for taking backups, Formatting etc. For Installing the recovery we need an interface in PC , Install ODIN and Samsung Drivers. (Links below)

  •  Close ODIN and disconnect the USB.

9. Shut Down the phone and restart manually into the recovery mode by Volume Up, Home, & Power . Be sure to reboot into recovery immediately after having installed the custom recovery. Otherwise the custom recovery will be overwritten and the device will reboot (appearing as though your custom recovery failed to install).

  • You will be seeing the recovery screen now (TEAMWIN). There you have options to Backup. Please do the backup into the SD Card. It may take a while depending on the data size.

10. Once Backup is complete, Select Wipe and then Factory Reset.

12. Navigate to /sdcard and select the Cyanogen package.

13. Follow the on-screen notices to install the package.
Once installation has finished, return to the main menu and select Reboot, then System. The device will now boot into CyanogenMod. (First boot will take some time for starting up, do not panic)
